ContxOS vs Mem0: Project Knowledge Base or Memory API?

Mem0 extracts facts from conversations for developers and now ships an MCP server and weekly Dream consolidation. ContxOS keeps typed decisions, handoffs and workflows. Compared.

In short

Mem0 is a memory layer for developers. It distills messages into facts scoped by user, agent or app, runs a hosted MCP server and a Claude connector, and since August 2026 consolidates weekly with "Dream", superseding old memories. ContxOS is built for the work rather than the user: typed decisions with rationale, session handoffs, and workflows whose runs are tracked outside the chat. Choose Mem0 to add memory to an app you are building; choose ContxOS to give your own agents a project record.

Side by side

CapabilityContxOSMem0
What it isA hosted knowledge base that AI agents read and write while they work on your projects.A memory API and SDK. Messages are distilled into facts with entity linking.
Built forPeople and teams whose agents work on projects.Developers adding per-user memory to their apps, plus an MCP server for individuals.
Where it worksAny MCP client with OAuth sign-in (Claude.ai, Claude Code and others). One memory, shared by every connected agent.SDKs, and a hosted MCP server (Claude, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and others). Official Claude connector since July 2026.
How memory is writtenDeliberately: when a session closes, in a handoff, when you say "record this", or as a workflow step. No transcript ingestion.Automatically extracted from messages.
StructureTyped entries (decision, result, plan, TODO, bug, finding, note…) joined by typed links (supersedes, resolves, implements, supports, refutes…), each with an authority level.Facts with entity linking and structured user profiles. Graph linking on Pro.
Keeping memory currentEvery search result shows its date and whether it is superseded (with a pointer to the replacement), expired or in conflict. Weak matches are labeled low confidence.Memory decay and temporal reasoning. Dream (Pro and Enterprise) merges and supersedes weekly, keeping a pointer to the replacement.
Session handoffsStructured handoffs (accomplishments, pending work by priority, blockers by severity, decisions). "resume" restores one in a single step. Not documented.
ProceduresWorkflows (stages, steps, per-client variants). Runs track position, verified facts and holds outside the chat, and proven steps can go to subagents. Not documented.
Self-hostHosted only.Yes. Open source (Apache-2.0).
PriceFree plan with one project and one seat. Paid plans add projects and seats (see contxos.com/pricing).Hobby free (1 project); Starter $19; Pro $249 (unlimited projects, graph, Dream); Enterprise custom.

Facts about users, or a record of work

Mem0’s core unit is a fact about an entity: a user prefers vegetarian food, an account runs on the Pro plan. Its API is built for retrieving the right facts for the right user in milliseconds, at the scale of an app with many users.

ContxOS’s core unit is an entry in a body of work, such as a decision, a result, a bug or a step in a procedure. Each carries its rationale and links, and it is written deliberately rather than extracted. That makes ContxOS slower to fill and much more precise to act on, which is the trade you want when an agent is about to change code or post a journal entry.

Where they overlap

Both run as remote MCP servers, both consolidate memory in the background (Mem0’s Dream runs weekly, while ContxOS’s Dream runs when you ask), and both supersede outdated knowledge instead of deleting it. If all you need is "remember what I told you last week" across Claude chats, either works.

Which one fits

ContxOS fits when

  • You want your agents to follow procedures and hand work off between sessions.
  • You need decisions with rationale and history, not extracted facts.
  • You want a flat, simple plan rather than usage-metered adds and retrievals.

Mem0 fits when

  • You are building an app and need memory for its end users through an SDK.
  • You need self-hosting or on-premises deployment.
