ContxOS vs CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and Markdown Memory Files

Markdown memory files are free, local and simple, and they stop scaling once a project’s history outgrows what fits in every prompt. When to keep them and when to add a knowledge base.

In short

CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md are loaded into every session, which makes them ideal for a short set of always-on rules. Claude Code’s auto memory adds machine-local notes. Basic Memory and the MCP reference memory server turn markdown or JSON files into searchable memory. ContxOS takes over where files stop scaling: a shared, searchable history of decisions, handoffs and workflows across machines, clients and teammates. Keep the file for rules and put the history in ContxOS.

What it isA hosted knowledge base that AI agents read and write while they work on your projects.Instruction files loaded into every Claude Code session, plus machine-local auto memory notes.Markdown files you own, indexed for full-text, semantic and graph search over MCP.
Loaded howOn demand, by search.Always: CLAUDE.md in full; the first 200 lines or 25 KB of the auto-memory index. On demand, by search.
Shared across machines and peopleYes, per project with members.CLAUDE.md through git. Auto memory is machine-local.Cloud and Teams plans (roles since May 2026).
StructureTyped entries (decision, result, plan, TODO, bug, finding, note…) joined by typed links (supersedes, resolves, implements, supports, refutes…), each with an authority level.Free text. Auto memory uses four note types (user, feedback, project, reference).Observations, typed relations, wiki links and schemas.
Keeping it currentEvery search result shows its date and whether it is superseded (with a pointer to the replacement), expired or in conflict. Weak matches are labeled low confidence.Manual editing. Auto memory records a modified timestamp.Manual editing of files.
Handoffs and workflowsStructured handoffs (accomplishments, pending work by priority, blockers by severity, decisions). "resume" restores one in a single step. Workflows (stages, steps, per-client variants). Runs track position, verified facts and holds outside the chat, and proven steps can go to subagents. Not built in.Not built in.
PriceFree plan with one project and one seat. Paid plans add projects and seats (see contxos.com/pricing).Free.Local version free and open source; cloud from $15/seat/month.

Where files work

A short CLAUDE.md is one of the highest-value things you can give a coding agent. It is versioned with the code, reviewed in pull requests and always loaded. Nothing in ContxOS replaces it. Anthropic and OpenAI both advise keeping required team guidance in these files.

Where files stop scaling

  • Everything in the file costs context on every turn, so history cannot live there.
  • Files do not know that one decision replaced another. The old paragraph stays until someone deletes it.
  • Machine-local notes do not follow you to another laptop, a cloud session or a teammate.
  • A file cannot tell you which step of a half-finished procedure you stopped at.

Which one fits

ContxOS fits when

  • Your CLAUDE.md keeps growing with history and exceptions.
  • You work across machines, clients or teammates.
  • You want handoffs and repeatable procedures.

CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md fits when

  • Always, for short always-on rules. Use it alongside ContxOS.

Basic Memory fits when

  • You want memory as local markdown files you own, editable in Obsidian.

What should stay in CLAUDE.md?

Build and test commands, conventions, and hard rules the agent needs on every turn. Keep it short.

What should move to ContxOS?
