ContxOS vs ChatGPT Memory and Projects
ChatGPT memory personalizes your chats and now rewrites itself in the background. ContxOS keeps a typed project record that any MCP agent can search. How they compare.

In short
ChatGPT’s memory combines saved memories with a summary built from your chat history, and since June 2026 a background process rewrites it and revises time-sensitive entries. Projects can keep memory project-only. It stays inside ChatGPT, and Codex keeps a separate local memory. ContxOS is a project knowledge base outside any one assistant, with typed decisions, handoffs and workflows that every connected MCP agent shares.
Side by side
| Capability | ContxOS | ChatGPT memory |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A hosted knowledge base that AI agents read and write while they work on your projects. | Saved memories plus reference chat history, shown as an auto-updated memory summary. |
| Where it works | Any MCP client with OAuth sign-in (Claude.ai, Claude Code and others). One memory, shared by every connected agent. | ChatGPT. Codex clients use a separate local memory store. |
| How memory is written | Deliberately: when a session closes, in a handoff, when you say "record this", or as a workflow step. No transcript ingestion. | Automatically, with a background rewrite ("Dreaming", rolled out from June 2026). |
| Structure | Typed entries (decision, result, plan, TODO, bug, finding, note…) joined by typed links (supersedes, resolves, implements, supports, refutes…), each with an authority level. | Memory summary and saved memories. Typed entries and links are not documented. |
| Keeping memory current | Every search result shows its date and whether it is superseded (with a pointer to the replacement), expired or in conflict. Weak matches are labeled low confidence. | Background process revises time-sensitive memories automatically. |
| Session continuity | Structured handoffs (accomplishments, pending work by priority, blockers by severity, decisions). "resume" restores one in a single step. | Reference chat history. |
| Separation | Projects, optional buckets within a project, per-project members, seats. | Projects with default or project-only memory. Shared projects are always project-only. |
| Other clients over MCP | ContxOS is the MCP server. | ChatGPT is an MCP client (developer mode and custom apps). Its own memory is not exposed. |

Personal memory and project memory
ChatGPT’s memory is designed to know you better over time. OpenAI reports that its recall evaluation rose substantially with the 2026 Dreaming update. That is the right design for a personal assistant. It is not designed to be a record of a project that several agents and people work on, and OpenAI’s own Codex docs advise keeping required team guidance in AGENTS.md rather than in memory.
ContxOS fills that role. The record is explicit, typed and shared, and any agent you connect can read it, not only ChatGPT.
Which one fits
ContxOS fits when
- Your work spans more than one AI client, or more than one person.
- You need a record of decisions and why they changed, not a profile.
ChatGPT memory fits when
- You live in ChatGPT and want it to remember your preferences automatically.
